Eye Care Information

My wife, who is 87, has just begun to suffer from double vision known as Fourth nerve palsy, also known as trochlear nerve palsy. She will return to the in ophthalmologist in 6 weeks after some tests by a neurologist.
In researching this condition I have learned it may be permanent, but Fresnel stick-on prisms or ground-in lens prisms can be useful to compensate. We would opt for the ground-in lens prism. While cost is no object to get the best solution, we don’t spend money unnecessarily. I am wondering if the lenses are so complicated that Walmart or Sams could not do a good job? I am sure the ophthalmologist will make a recommendation, and I it probably will be a private office.
Any thoughts?

Sorry to hear about the 4th nerve palsy. Hopefully nothing major is going on to cause it. I'm sure you've read up more on it than I have, but it seems that for uncomplicated 4th nerve palsy, they often suggest the stick-on prism for the first few months to allow the changes to stabilize before making lenses with the changes ground in.

I would think that if Walmart, Sam's, or Costco will make the lenses with a prism adjustment, they will likely be accurate to the requested specifications.

I would most likely defer to the ophthalmologist's recommendations though, as they have probably seen the results from different places. Ask him/her what they think.

I will probably take any recommendations by the ophthalmologist. The six weeks before the next visit will give some time for stabilization.
